Look at that epic picture above.  Jim Henson and Frank Oz, co-directors of The Dark Crystal, along with a third man, who most of us don’t know nearly as well.  That man is Gary Kurtz, who served as co-Producer and Second Unit Director of The Dark Crystal, and we are saddened to learn that he passed away this week at the age of 78.

Outside of The Dark Crystal, Kurtz is best known for producing Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.  He also produced Return to Oz, which featured Brian Henson as Jack Pumpkinhead.

According to Wikipedia, Kurtz was instrumental (slight pun intended) in working with composer Trevor Jones to replace the score of the film, which was originally intended to reflect the alien-ness of the world by using acoustical instruments, electronics, and building structures.  Instead, they created a sweeping epic score, which is among the more memorable elements of the film.

Kurtz won a few accolades for his work on The Dark Crystal, including a Saturn Award and a nomination for a Hugo Award.

As you can see, Gary Kurtz played an important role in the Henson universe, and we are extremely grateful for his contribution.
