Labyrinth is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year (the pearl anniversary, which I guess we can explain away as one of Jareth’s crystal balls), and we’re getting a brand new Blu-ray to celebrate!

If you’re like me, you have probably already purchased Labyrinth multiple times on multiple formats.  I owned the VHS, DVD, and now a Blu-ray myself, as well as a Laserdisc that I’ll never actually get to enjoy beyond its irony factor.  But this new Blu-ray looks like another must-buy, as it provides the film’s first transfer to 4K Ultra HD.  That means that this set will look absolutely breathtaking on your HD TV.

Also included in the Blu-ray set are:

  • Making-of documentary
  • Commentary by designer Brian Froud
  • A 24-page “digibook” edition with rare behind-the-scenes photos
  • Video of Jennifer Connelly and the Henson family discussing Jim Henson’s puppetry and filmmaking
  • An anniversary Q&A hosted by MythBusters‘ Adam Savage
  • A David Bowie remembrance by Connelly and Henson’s children

If you purchase from Amazon, you’ll also get the limited-edition “mirrorbox” packaging.  No, we have no idea what this means.

Also, this version of Labyrinth will be screened in theaters all around the country with Fathom Events on September 11th and September 14th!  What a great excuse to enjoy David Bowie’s bulge with a movie-going audience.

I don’t know about you, but I’m fully prepared to buy yet another copy of Labyrinth.  The Henson Company seems to have pulled out all the stops for this one.  Who knows what they’ll have for us for the 40th anniversary!

The Blu-ray set will be in stores on September 20th.
