Disney’s answer to Comic Con, the D23 Fan Expo, will be taking place in Anaheim from August 14-16. We’ve been expecting the Muppets to have some sort of presence, since they’ve got a new TV show premiering the following month. And now we’ve got news of exactly what’s going down.
The Muppets will get a spotlight in their own panel, aptly titled, “The Magic Behind The Muppets“. It will take place on Friday, August 14 at 10:00 am on Stage 23.
Here’s D23’s official description of the panel:
Calling all Muppet fans! Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with the Muppets? Here’s your chance to find out firsthand when ABC presents a panel on the magic and art of being a Muppet Performer. Join these creative artists and some of your favorite characters, along with a few surprise guests, for a rare and unforgettable demonstration of what it takes to bring these iconic and enduring personalities to life.
What’s most exciting to me is that they’re finally recognizing the artistry behind (or below) the Muppets, rather than hiding the puppeteers away and trying to convince the kiddies that the Muppets are really for real. Between this and the Muppeteers’ spotlight at San Diego Comic Con, this may be the start of a new era of puppet (and puppeteer) appreciation.
We’re also hoping that the Muppets will have more of a presence at D23 beyond this. For example, at ABC’s TV presentation. Finger’s (and paws and hooves) crossed!
