It’s Official: Muppets Coming to Disney World’s Liberty Square

I love it when pleasant rumors turn out to be true, especially when the pleasant rumors are about the Muppets doing new things.

Rumors have been swimming around for a while now, like tadpoles in a frog pond, that there might be some kind of new Muppet thing coming to the Magic Kingdom at Orlando’s Walt Disney World resort.  Today the news was confirmed by the official Disney Parks Blog, and I’m going to shamelessly copy-and-paste their entire announcement:

Beginning this fall, the Muppets will be visiting Magic Kingdom Park, where they’ll take part in an all-new live show, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History.”

Sam Eagle, the fiercely patriotic American eagle who is forever trying to set a high moral standard for the Muppets, will join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo and James Jefferson, town crier of Liberty Square, as they gather outside The Hall of Presidents to present historical tales in hysterical fashion as only they can. From the midnight ride of Paul Revere to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Muppets appear throughout the day to share with Guests, their own unique take on the founding fathers and the birth of the United States of America.

Featuring an original song and plenty of wacky Muppets humor, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History” will make its debut in October 2016.

That sounds like fun, and it’s a great opportunity for the Muppets to be irreverent — and for Sam to be both patriotic and uptight.  As is often the case with these things, there’s a lot we don’t know yet: Will they be costumed characters?  Puppets?  Will the characters be lip-syncing to a prerecorded track?  Or will Steve, Eric and Dave be working at Disney World doing multiple shows every single day for the foreseeable future?  (I think we can safely say “no” to that last one, but wouldn’t that be something?)

This comes right on the heels of the news of a Rizzo-themed pizza joint at Hollywood Studios, so Disney World is about to become a very Muppety place indeed.  Keep an eye on this website for more info as we get it.

And if I may make a personal appeal to the Disney people: Dear Disney people, I will be at Disney World in mid-October for my honeymoon (with my fiancée Staci, who also loves Muppets!).  Can you please, please, please, please make sure the show is running by then.  Did I mention it’s my honeymoon?  Thanks. Love, Ryan.
