RIP Caroll Spinney

Caroll Spinney has been the heart of Sesame Street since its very first episode in 1969, just over 50 years ago.  Welcoming us to the Street in the form of Big Bird or Oscar the Grouch almost every day, and even after he was no longer able to hold the puppets in the air, he continued to be a presence both on and off screen.

We are heartbroken to learn that Caroll Spinney has passed away.

To say that Caroll was important to Sesame Street is the biggest understatement of all time.  His performances as Big Bird and Oscar defined the TV series that helped develop generations.  He was not only integral to creating the greatest series of all time, but he embodied two of our best friends.

The loss of Caroll Spinney will be a powerful one to deal with, but we can be grateful that Caroll brought us thousands of hours of quality television, and that he played one of the most significant parts in the education and entertainment of millions of children.

We can’t properly pay homage to Caroll in this small space, so please keep an eye out on ToughPigs throughout the week as we celebrate the life of Caroll and the amazing work he gave us over the past 50 years.
