Muppet Panels at Comic-Con International

WonderpigComic-Con International is upon us, swooping down on San Diego in less than two weeks with its patented brand of nerdiness, obsession, and an overabundance of pop culture of all types.  One of those types, lucky enough for us, is the Muppets.  While there isn’t much solid Muppet, Sesame, or Henson representation at SDCC this year, there are some panels you can attend to get a glimpse of some Muppet celebrities or learn a few things about Henson projects coming down the wire.

Check out our list of announced Muppet-related panels below, and if you’re attending Comic Con this year, be sure to let us know if you learn anything groundbreaking!

Saturday, July 20:

  • 10:00 AM: Behind the Creatures with Muppet director Kirk Thatcher.  Kirk may be on hand to talk more about his experiences with Star Wars, Star Trek, and Gremlins, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t throw a few awesome Muppets Tonight stories in there too.
  • 12:00 PM: How I Met Your Mother with The Muppets writer and star Jason Segel.  I don’t know if Segel has much more to say about The Muppets that he hasn’t already revealed, but you never know!  Hopefully someone will have the opportunity to ask a question, like if he keeps in touch with Uncle Deadly.
  • 3:00 PM: Dark Crystal Author Quest: All You Need to Know with Lisa Henson and Cheryl Henson.  Here, the Henson daughters will be talking more about the contest where you can win the opportunity to write a Dark Crystal prequel novel.  Apparently panel attendees will also be among the first to see the new Dark Crystal website: Bringing Gelflings in to the 21st century!
  • 4:30 PM: Archaia Entertainment: Announcements, Sneak Previews, and What’s Next! With Archaia’s continuing relationship with The Jim Henson Company, I bet they’re planning on hinting (or maybe announcing?) their next collaboration.  Hopefully, no more Skrumps, pleaseandthankyou.

Sunday, July 21:

  • 10:00 AM: World Premiere of Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map with Muppet performers Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Adam Rudman.  This one was a bit of a surprise to us.  Apparently some of the aforementioned Muppet people lent their talents to a Scooby-Doo puppet film.  (You can view a preview of it right here.)  Maybe this is the opportunity for the Muppets to make an out-of-left-field celebrity cameo on a Scooby-Doo episode, ala Adam West or Don Knotts.
  • 11:00 AM: How and Why to Write a Great All-Ages Comic Book with Henson comics creators David Petersen, Katie Cook, and Joe LeFavi.
  • 12:00 PM: Creating Comics for Kids with Henson comics creators Joe LeFavi and Heather Nuhfer.  This entry and the one above are filled with folks who’ve worked on the Fraggle Rock comic book, among other Henson funnybooks.  Hopefully their experiences writing and drawing Fraggles was as important to their careers as it is to us, since we sure do mention them a lot on ToughPigs.

If more Muppet/Sesame/Henson events are announced, we’ll be sure to update this page for your convenience.  Have fun at Comic-Con, kids!

Many thanks to Smig for all this info!  Click here to hope that everyone actually talks about Muppets on the ToughPigs forum!
