Disney Doesn’t Announce New Muppet Movie

Filed under: Feature — Tags: — Matthew Soberman @ 12:15 am

Disney didn’t send shockwaves through the entertainment world this morning by announcing that a new Muppet movie is not currently in production. Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and the rest of the Muppet gang won’t be back in an all-new production heading to theaters on May 22nd, 2020, because Disney probably has a new Marvel movie to release. Disney studio executive Ed O. Floyou said in a statement, “We look forward to putting a brand new Muppet adventure on the big screen. We’re just not ready to pull the trigger on that yet. You never know when the mood will strike Kevin Feige to make a Speedball movie.”

Speculation is running wild as to who might have been brought in to work on this not-a-movie. Many industry insiders believed that Bret McKenzie would be brought in to write music for his third consecutive Muppet movie, though recently Paul Williams wrote a cryptic tweet suggesting work on a Muppet project, but we now know that it’s definitely not this, as this isn’t happening. Others believed Lin-Manuel Miranda expressed interest in the film in either a performing or songwriting capacity, but apparently that wasn’t enough to get a film greenlit. Directors were also speculated about, with potential directors ranging from James Bobin to Brian Henson to Frank Oz to Jim Henson’s ghost, which is just as plausible as this movie actually happening.

Imaginations will run wild as anticipation builds for a brand-new Muppet movie, and right now, that’s all that’s going to happen. Don’t expect ToughPigs to update you with any new information on this non-story.
