Normally we abhor reporting on rumors. As far as we’re concerned, nothing is real until it’s officially announced. So consider this news less about an upcoming feature, and more that the idea of a Miss Piggy movie was evoked by someone who might actually be able to help make it a reality.
In the latest episode of Las Culturistas – the popular podcast from Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers – Jennifer Lawrence stopped by to talk about many things, only one of which (possibly by accident) was Miss Piggy.
As revealed by Lawrence, “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole Escola is writing it.” She did not expand beyond that,
So of course, we’re in full speculation mode now. On one hand, I’m dubious that it will come to fruition, if only because Disney is so tight-fisted with the Muppets, and they’re already doing new/old things with Miss Piggy through the Muppet Show revival. And on the other hand, this would be a great way to revitalize Miss Piggy as a character and a star with her own unique voice. Cole Escola – writer and star of Broadway’s Oh Mary! – might actually be the perfect person to breathe new life into the Pig.
It’s also very likely that this project may not even be on Disney’s radar yet. With no additional information beyond the above quote, it’s possible that they’re only working on a spec script for now, with the hope that they can use their star power to get it in front of the right people at Muppets Studio.
Time will tell on all things. But at the very least, we hope to get a glimpse at what Escola, Lawrence, and Stone are envisioning. I can only assume their ideas for a Miss Piggy movie are bonkers and boundary-pushing and quintessentially Piggy.
