Elmo is dead. You can blame KAWS.
According to Hypebeast, KAWS and AllRightsReserved are teaming up for a new line of vinyl figures starring the corpses of the Sesame Street characters. Yes, you heard me – Elmo, Bert, Ernie, Oscar, and Big Bird have had their eyes cartoonishly Xed out and have gone limp as if they are in the process of zombification.
I get that this is part of KAWS’s aesthetic, as they did something similar with a series of t-shirts and plushes that sold extremely well (I still see the KAWS/Sesame shirts being worn out in the wild all the time). But this… I don’t really get.
The dead eyes, the corpse poses, the eerie grins… these are all straight out of a horror movie. But, you know, for kids?
But if YOU want to get them, they’ll be available for pre-order on October 16th on the DDT website for the low, low price of $1,300 for the full set.
Y’all, I really don’t get any of this. But godspeed to those of you who do.
