Sesame Street is known and loved by millions, so it’s a frequent topic of conversation and celebration on social media. Folks love posting and commenting on Facebook, Instagram, Facegram, and Instabook to rhapsodize about the show and celebrate their favorite characters. “I love Grover!” they’ll say, or “I love Oscar the Grouch!” or “I love the guy who banged his head on the piano!”
It’s not surprising that many Sesame fans really like Mr. Snuffleupagus (“Snuffy” to his friends). He’s an exceptionally likeable shaggy-elephant-looking fellow as shaggy-elephant-looking fellows go! But just because folks like him a lot doesn’t mean they can spell his name correctly.
Not that I blame them — “Snuffleupagus” is a pretty hard word to spell, especially considering the fact that it comes from a show aimed at kids who don’t know how to read yet.
As I’ve come across through these posts and comments recently, I’ve been assembling a collection of different ways people have misspelled “Snuffleupagus” online, and I’d like to share them with you now. Note that these are all REAL misspellings I found, mostly on Facebook. And just to keep things interesting, I’d like to present them in order from “LEAST WRONG” to “MOST WRONGEST.” If you happen to disagree with my order… well, blow it out your snuffle!
Please note that I was worried that simply presenting these misspellings wouldn’t be sufficient enough for this article, so I’ve supplemented them with some obnoxious parenthetical commentary provided by me. ENJOY!
Snuffelupagus (so close!)
Snuffalupagus (a very good attempt!)
Snuffulupagus (a very good attempt with a u!)
Snuffaluppagus (a very good attempt with an extra p!)
Snuffalupugus (a slightly less good attempt!)
Stuffy (a failed attempt at his nickname, but it would be accurate when he has a cold!)
Snuffleuffagus (so many Fs!)
Snuffaluffagus (so many Fs, but further from the correct spelling!)
Snuffleopalos (isn’t that guy on Good Morning America? Ha ha!)
Snuffalupigus (the missing link between Snuffy and Miss Piggy?)
Snufalofogis (nope, that’s not how it’s spelled!)
Snufulafucous (that sounds CONTAGIOUS!)
Snuflepagus (sorry, not enough syllables!)
Snapalapagus (how many lapaguses would a snapalapagus snap if a snapalapagus could snap lapaguses?)
Snuff applicants (that’s not a Sesame Street Muppet, that’s people who submit their resumes to Skoal Tobacco!)
That’s it! That’s the whole entire article! Wasn’t this ridiculous? Or should I say… wasn’t this ridiculuffagus?
So which one was your favorite? I want to know! Tell me!
